Accommodation Allocation Policy

Undergraduates will be accommodated in College-owned accommodation for the entirety of their course, if they wish. First year undergraduates are allocated rooms on the central Oxford site or in Ship Street. In subsequent years, undergraduates may apply by ballot for accommodation in 3-person or 4-person flats at the Annexe sites.

All rooms in the College and Ship Street houses will vary in size and shape due to the age of the buildings.

Availability

Undergraduate rooms - All fresher undergraduates are allocated rooms in College or Ship Street Centre by the College. Any rooms remaining after the fresher undergraduates are housed are offered to existing undergraduates.

Graduate rooms - A number of rooms are offered to existing graduates and the remainder allocated to fresher graduates by the College.

Each site has a laundry, with token operated automatic washing machines and tumble dryers. The laundries also have an iron and ironing board which can be used free of charge.

All flats have free WiFi access to the College and University computer networks, but telephone service, if required, must be arranged by the occupants directly with the telephone company. Televisions are not provided, and students wishing to bring their own will need a valid television licence.

First year undergraduates will be pre allocated rooms on the central college site and in the Ship Street Centre. First year graduates will be allocated rooms in Ship Street and 121 Woodstock Road.

THE COLLEGE

What are rooms in College and Ship Street like? - the rooms vary from modern purpose built rooms in the Ship Street Centre and Staircases 18 and 19 to quirky rooms in 17th century buildings. More information can be found at http://www.jesus.ox.ac.uk/admissions/accommodation.

The college buildings date from the 17th century onwards, with the most recent addition, the Old Members' Building, added in the 20th century. The rooms are regularly refurbished to a high standard.

In Second Quad, the rooms are 'double sets': a shared living room with separate bedrooms. Each student has their own working area in the living room. In Third Quad, rooms are single bedroom/studies with washbasins, furnished with a single bed, a desk, chairs, drawers and a wardrobe. About 25% of the rooms on the main site have en-suite facilities (priority will be given to those with medical needs). The remaining rooms on the central site have shared bathroom facilities on each staircase. Staircases are mixed-sex, except where baths or showers do not have separate access.

There are no kitchen facilities available for undergraduate use on the central site or in Ship Street.

SHIP STREET

The Ship Street houses are all 17th and 18th century buildings, built on the old city wall. Accommodation in these houses is in single rooms, which share bath/shower rooms and kitchen facilities. To see examples of the rooms, visit the Accommodation page on the College website here and scroll down to the Further Information menu.

Meals are available in the College dining hall during Full Term and during most of the vacations.

Bedding and towels are not provided. Pre-paid card operated laundry facilities are available on main College site. All rooms have free WiFi connection to the College and University  networks.

Please note that there are locked bicycle sheds but no parking for cars available on the main College site and Ship Street.

Ship Street Centre

Ship Street Centre site- Central Oxford

Ship Street Centre site- Central Oxford

In 2008, the College was extremely fortunate to acquire a lease on a Victorian warehouse in Ship Street, just opposite the entrance to the College’s third quad. It gave the College a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to expand on its historic site.

The Ship Street Centre

  • provides additional, accessible, affordable, high-quality student accommodation, consisting of 31 en-suite rooms, increasing the College’s central accommodation by 30%.
  • provides additional teaching/meeting facilities. These facilities include a 100-seat lecture theatre, two tutorial rooms and a reception area.
  • provides a modern, centrally-located conference facility, which is both an attractive venue and a valuable source of income during vacations.

The £7.3million project to develop the building gives the College a much needed expansion of its central student accommodation and teaching space. The College has raised £1.8million towards the project so far and aims to raise the total £7.3million over the next 25 years.

Therefore, the College needs the help of as many people as possible, and we hope that Old Members and others will want to play a role in this exciting development. By supporting this appeal you are making a long-term investment in education at Jesus College in an uncertain and increasingly competitive financial and educational environment.

Those Who Will Benefit From This Project

  • Over 4,500 undergraduates will benefit by the experience of living and studying at the Ship Street Centre during the building’s150-year lease.
  • The increase in onsite accommodation for undergraduates has allowed more rooms to be available to the growing graduate community, helping strengthen their relationship with College and enhance the quality of their experience at Jesus College.
  • The academic staff and student communities have more and better quality teaching space, for tutorials, classes and lectures.
  • The College will benefit financially from the growing conference market by being able to offer high-quality facilities in central Oxford.
